SACS Then and Now........

St. Anne Catholic School was established to answer the need of the Church and the community to have an institution of learning that could offer quality Catholic education in the area. The school rose from a very humble beginning as a kinder school founded by Rev. Fr. Agustin Somosa, the then parish priest of the town of Balasan. As a true evangelizer at heart, it was his dream to put up a Pre-elementary school where young boys and girls could be educated in the light of the Catholic faith.

Assisted by Miss Pura Garganta, a retired District Supervisor of the district of Balasan, the school started its operation on June 1987. The kindergarten classes were housed in the ground floor of the parish hall across the church. The school started with two teachers in the person of  Ms. Januaria de los Reyes and Ms. Josephine Benjamin. The simple basic curriculum consisted more of socialization, as values were given emphasis in the process. Some other generous government agencies like Balasan Rural Health Clinic and the like, contributed help by offering free medical and dental services to the pupils.

To answer to the mandate of giving quality education, the administrator of St. Anne tried to create teachers’ upgrading program by exposing them to various seminars and workshops intended to cater to their professional growth and development. These trainings likewise helped the teachers a lot in preparation for the teachers’ board examination to make them become civil service eligible.

With the reshuffling of the assignments of the priests in 1993, the parish was turned over to the new parish priest in the person of Rev. Fr. Norberto Tacadao. With the new parish priest running both the school and the parish, active participation of the lay leaders was needed. The kindergarten classes were transferred to the Church building while the old and dilapidated parish hall was repaired. The curriculum was still centered on socialization aspect, with the addition of values formation dimension.

Recognizing the inability of his office to effectively manage the school, Fr. Tacadao, after some consultation with the parents in the community, decided to turn over the management of St. Anne to the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines on June 14, 1996. The parish hall was then again renovated to accommodate the lodging of the sisters who were assigned to manage the school. A yearly application for additional grade level was done, and permit to operate was completed for the whole elementary department. With the new administration, the school assumed a clearer direction and renewed vigor in terms of Christian and value formation. Classes were still held at the cramped place originally intended as parish hall. Due to the growing student population, facilities were improved despite the meager income which is mainly coming from the low tuition of the pupils.

Through God’s Mercy and the continuous efforts of the Sisters and Teachers

St. Anne Catholic School of Balasan Inc. was granted, government recognition to first year – Fourth Year effective S.Y. 2006-2007   given at the city of Iloilo Philippines the 30th of January Two Thousand Six.

With the passing of the years, the parents gradually felt a need to have a Catholic high school in the area in order to continue the Catholic education of their children. Having pledged their support to the sisters, they petitioned for the opening of the High School Department. Thus, answering the urgent need of the parents in the community, the administrator of the school started to process the application to open up the high school department on March 2004. The Principal readily applied for the opening of the first year high school level. The initial enrollment for first year came from the graduates of the school, with the addition of some coming from the public school whose parents opted for a Catholic education of their children.

Through the blessings of Divine Providence, the Sisters were able to find a bigger place for the growing school population. A property belonging to Col. Tomas Villanueva was offered to the school at a reasonable price. The Sisters readily grabbed the opportunity and bought the 1.7 hectares lot in Tinguian, Balasan, just a few kilometers away from the problacion proper. The ground breaking for the new building was done on March 8, 2004 after which the construction of a one-storey, four-classroom edifice was started. By June 2004, some elementary grades were transferred to the new site, while the pre-elementary pupils stayed at the original place, for safety reasons.

As the school gradually develops, the sisters try to improve the programs, plans and facilities in order to be able to offer quality education. The teachers have undergone a regular updating through the unified program of the Office of the Dominican Schools Superintendent. Some schemes to help the poor and deserving students were availed. The Mother Rosario Scholarship foundation of the Congregation has helped a lot in terms of giving financial aid to poor and deserving Dominican student. In the school year 2002-2003, three grade six pupils topped the Mo. Rosario Scholarship foundation exam administered to all the thirteen schools of the Congregation. This scholarship had been instrumental in the continuing education of those scholars at St. Anne.

Indeed, the future shows a promising vision of hope for St. Anne Catholic School. The school strives to achieve the Dominican culture of excellence as embodied in the Vision and Mission Statement. All efforts were directed toward the integral, harmonious and Christian formation of the pupils and students of the school. All aspect of the learners was looked into, as the school continues in her evangelizing mission to be an effective arm of the Church in the Christian formation of the young learners. This dream of St. Anne is achieved through the harmonious and collaborative efforts of all those who are concerned for the bright future of our children.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

“ A true education aims at the formation of the human person with respect to his ultimate goal and simultaneously with respect to the good of those societies of which, as a man, he is a member, and whose responsibilities, as indult he will share.” (Declaration of Christian Education, Vatican II)

In line with the above declaration, our statement of Philosophy of Education follows:

Saint Anne Catholic School is an educational institution dedicated to the preparation of the whole person for a life here and hereafter. It is committed to developing boys and girls who think, judge, and act in accord with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Through love and understanding of the unique individual, the school guides each child toward a positive self concept in the development of his/her spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, cultural and physical being.

We, at Saint Anne Catholic School, are privileged to participate with the parents in the education of their children. In order to accomplish the function of our school, students, teachers and parents MUST work together in support of our common goals.
